Cecil Shorts to Pay a Visit to the Buccaneers
The Buccaneers are looking to improve at the wide receiver position, hosting a veteran former Jaguar.
There was a lot of talk about the Buccaneers’ wide receivers during the off-season. There is Evans and Jackson at the top, and Adam Humphries named by coach Koetter as the number three. Who is behind them? Russell Shepard and Evan Spencer were retained, but admittedly, that leaves the cupboard a bit thin.

So the Bucs are doing something about it, or at least attempting to. Take a look at this tweet from Adam Caplan of ESPN:
#Buccaneers are expected to have former #Texans WR Cecil Shorts in for a visit within next 24 hours, source said.

So they are looking at a veteran, what do we think?
If he looks good, it’s not a bad idea. Shorts is only 28 years old. Once he began to see the field in Jacksonville in 2012, he never posted less than 53 receptions in a season, with his best being a 66 reception performance in 2013. He has never posted 1,000 yards, but he did come close, posting 979 yards to go along with seven touchdowns in 2012.
Last year he spent time with the Houston Texans, posting 42 catches for 482 yards and two scores.
He also shouldn’t cost very much. We are almost at week one, where guys are scrambling for jobs at the last minute. According to Spotrac, he has never earned more than $2.9 million in a season. With his limited performance in 2015 he will not earn a raise. They should be able to sign Cecil on the cheap if his visit works out well.
What also makes him an interesting choice is the return game. He could provide an alternative, with experience returning kicks and punts for the Jaguars in 2014. He also was a punt returner for the Texans last year.
We shall see how things go, but Jason Licht is certainly keeping his eyes open.
