Cecil out as Titans defensive coordinator

Published Jan. 20, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher has decided not to keep Chuck Cecil as his defensive coordinator after two seasons in which the Titans ranked among the NFL's worst in yards allowed.

Fisher informed Cecil on Thursday of his decision, and Cecil told The Associated Press that the move caught him off guard. But Cecil said he understands that he is the coordinator of a defense that didn't play as well as they needed to while going 6-10 this season.

Cecil was promoted from secondary coach to coordinator after Jim Schwartz left for Detroit two years ago. Cecil says Fisher's the head coach and has to do what he thinks is the right thing.

The Titans were not immediately available for comment.
