Carroll: Seahawks' Lynch will not return to practice this week

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch will not be available until the regular-season finale at the earlier.

Speaking on his weekly radio show Monday, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told ESPN 710 that Lynch is not ready to practice this week while he continues to rehab from abdominal surgery on Nov. 25.

“Uh, no. I don’t think that’s what’s going on," Carroll said of the possibility of Lynch returning to practice while conceding that his star running back is in “a race against time right now. I know he’s going for it. That’s what’s important."

Lynch, who has not played since Nov. 15 against Arizona, has been training with MMA coach Tareq Azim, FOX Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer reported Sunday. His recovery took on heightened urgency after rookie running back Thomas Rawls sustained a broken ankle at Baltimore on Dec. 13.

That prompted the Seahawks to bring back former second-round draft choice Christine Michael and re-sign Bryce Brown for the third time this season. Despite less than a full week of practice, Michael rushed for 84 yards on 16 carries and Brown added 43 yards on nine attemtps in Sunday's 30-13 win over Cleveland.

Carroll refused to call his revamped backfield a "committee" on Sunday and one day later would not commit to Michael -- traded by Seattle to Dallas and subsequently released by the Cowboys and Washington Redskins this season -- as the starter for Sunday's rematch against the St. Louis Rams.

“This is the first step," Carroll told the radio station. "We’ll work together to see what will happen."
