Caldwell explains why Megatron wasn't on field for Packers' Hail Mary
The Detroit Lions were on the wrong side of a miracle last Thursday, when they lost to the Green Bay Packers on a Hail Mary to end the game.
In retrospect, the Lions could have done more to thwart Aaron Rodgers' desperation heave. For example, 6-foot-5 wide receiver Calvin Johnson should have been on the field to help knock down the jump-ball.
Over the weekend, Lions head coach Jim Caldwell explained why Megatron was on the sideline for the game-deciding play. He said the Lions were expecting another latteral play and not a Hail Mary, according to ESPN's Michael Rothstein:
Johnson has played three defensive snaps in his career, according to ESPN. Tight end Eric Ebron also confirmed that this is something the All-Pro pass-catcher practices "a lot."
In that situation, we have a couple of different things that we do. That was one where you’re kind of looking for more that pass-back-and-forth kind of thing because of the range. He ran around there so long, moved up, gave himself a chance to get into the end zone.
We had plenty of guys back there, we had plenty of guys. We just didn’t make the play. They did.
The Lions can't go back and change what happened last Thursday, but they'd be wise to have a gigantic player like Johnson leaping up for all future Hail Mary plays -- both offensive and defensive.
