The past five times the Buffalo Bills played the Seattle Seahawks, they’ve won three. Hopefully we can make that 4 out of the last 6 on Monday.

It was a little bit strange having to wait until Monday night to see our Buffalo Bills play, but living on the West Coast means a 5:30 PM game — the perfect time to get Pizza Hut.

As we patiently wait, I figured we could take a look back at the past five matchups the Bills have had with the Seattle Seahawks, since it doesn’t happen very often. In fact, these two teams haven’t met in nearly four years and only five times in nearly 16 years.

Upcoming Schedule

That game nearly 16 years ago was in late December of 2000 and marked the end of the 2000 season — the first season the Bills were without Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed and Bruce Smith and the first season that started our playoff drought.

This is no doubt a must-win for the Buffalo Bills, who will enter their bye week once the game is over. Going into your bye week off a victory will do wonders for this team’s confidence and help us finish strong as we look for that playoff spot we’ve been waiting so long for.

Going back to living on the West Coast, we’ve only had the opportunity to see the Bills play on television twice — Week 2 TNF vs. Jets and Week 8 vs. Patriots. As you know, both have been embarrassing losses, so a nice rebound on Monday night is definitely needed for Buffalo.

Before we get started, let’s get a quick summary of the game’s we’ll be talking about — the past five meetings with the Seahawks:

We begin with the 2012 matchup, the last time we saw the Seattle Seahawks.

The Buffalo Bills have faced Russell Wilson once since he entered the league and he ran all over our defense.

Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson was drafted in 2012 and has brought the Seattle Seahawks to the playoffs every year since. The Buffalo Bills got a good look at him that rookie season in Week 15, although it wasn’t all that memorable for the Bills.

It was also the first time the Buffalo Bills got the chance to play Marshawn Lynch, a player they drafted in 2007. As you’ll see in the next slide, Marshawn Lynch was actually the running back for the Bills when they played Seattle nearly four years earlier.

On December 16, 2012, the Bills and Seahawks met in Toronto, ON with only 41,000 people in attendance. The Bills came into this game 5-8, with the Seahawks 8-5 and battling for a playoff spot. Buffalo had a chance to stop that.

Russell Wilson came out of the gate on fire and it is something the Bills will have to monitor on Monday when the two meet. Within the first 9 minutes of play, Wilson had scored two rushing touchdowns — one for 14 yards and one for 25 yards. The Bills would cut the lead to 14-7 before the first quarter ended with a 14-yard C.J. Spiller rushing TD.

The second quarter started off much the same, with the Seahawks scoring another 17 points within the first 10 minutes — a 19-yard field goal, a 4-yard passing TD from Wilson to Zach Miller and another Wilson rushing touchdown for 13 yards. The Bills would once again be late to the party, scoring the final 10 points of the half with a 20-yard passing TD from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Stevie Johnson and a 41-yard field goal by Rian Lindell.

The second half was sad for the Buffalo Bills, who wouldn’t score again for the rest of the game.

The Seahawks would outscore the Bills 20-0 in the second half, which would include a 13-yard rushing TD by none other than Marshawn Lynch, two field goals and a 57-yard INT return TD by Earl Thomas.

The game ended 51-17 as the Bills got slaughtered in Toronto — probably a good sign that we should never even think about moving the team there again.

On Sunday, we can’t let Wilson use his mobile ability against us like he did 4 years ago. He finished with 92 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns, with Lynch adding 113 yards and one touchdown. If we let them run all over us, it will be tough to stay in this game.

Let’s move on to the next date, 09/07/2008.

The last time the Buffalo Bills defeated the Seattle Seahawks was to kick off the 2008 season at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

If you don’t remember the 2008 season, it’s the one that saw the Buffalo Bills reach 5-1 after Week 7 with Trent Edwards at quarterback — noting that the only loss was when J.P. Losman started.

It was also the season that they finished 2-8 the rest of the season, ending their season at another disappointing 7-9.

That season all began against the Seattle Seahawks, when the two teams met on September 7, 2008 at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Unlike the 2012 matchup we talked about last slide, the Buffalo Bills were in control of this entire game. They would end up winning 34-10 and start the season 1-0.

Seahawks 0 7 3 0 10

The first quarter of the game was rather boring, but the Buffalo Bills took a 7-0 lead after 12 minutes of play when Marshawn Lynch scored a 21-yard rushing touchdown. They held that 7-0 lead until roughly six minutes remained in the second quarter.

The Bills would strike again with a 63-yard punt return for a TD by Roscoe Parrish, giving the Bills a comfortable 14-0 lead in the second quarter. The Seahawks would respond less than 2 minutes later with a 20-yard passing TD from Matt Hasselbeck to Nate Burleson.

With the game at 14-7, the Bills would score two field goals in the final minute of the half to hold a 20-7 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was much like the second quarter with neither team scoring until about 8 minutes into the second half. The Seahawks started the scoring off with a 45-yard field goal, bringing the Bills’ lead down to 20-10. However, it was the last time Seattle would score in this game.

The Bills weren’t done scoring, though. With nearly 2 minutes left in the third quarter, Bills’ punter Brian Moorman executed a fake field goal perfectly and ended up throwing a 19-yard passing touchdown to bring the game to 27-10. Nearly 20 seconds later, Trent Edwards threw a 30-yard passing touchdown to Robert Royal bringing the game to 34-10.

The fourth quarter wouldn’t see any scoring from either side as the game ended 34-10 in favor of the Buffalo Bills.

It would be nice to see a box score similar to the one we saw on September 7, 2008 — the last time the Bills defeated the Seattle Seahawks. We have a much better team now than we did on that day, but so do the Seahawks.

It should make for a great game to watch Monday night.

Let’s move on to the next game, which took place on November 28, 2004 in Seattle, WA.

On November 28, 2004, Willis McGahee ran all over the Seahawks for another big victory vs. the Seattle Seahawks.

It was a Buffalo Bills’ offense that featured Drew Bledsoe, Willis McGahee, Eric Moulds and Lee Evans. A Bills’ defense that featured Terrence McGee, London Fletcher, Nate Clements, Takeo Spikes, Jeff Posey and Lawyer Milloy.

It was also against the Seattle Seahawks, which included Shaun Alexander, Matt Hasselbeck and Jerry Rice — who was a future hall-of-famer at the time playing in his final season before retiring.

Another high-scoring game for the Buffalo Bills, this win is what started the Bills’ two-game winning streak against the Seahawks — which was ended by Russell Wilson in his rookie year, we discussed it earlier.

On November 28, 2004, it was a game that was decided by Willis McGahee’s ability to find the endzone and it was something he did all night long. His efforts helped bring a struggling Buffalo team to 5-6 with their 38-9 win on this day, sending Seattle to 6-5 on the season.

McGahee would start the scoring off in the first quarter, which would end up being the only points scored in the first quarter. It was off a 2-yard run a little over four minutes into the game that gave the Bills an early 7-0 lead.

The second quarter was started off with a 25-yard field goal by Rian Lindell just a minute and a half into the quarter. The Seahawks would respond with a 19-yard field goal by Josh Brown with 8 minutes left in the quarter. Showing more offensive power, Drew Bledsoe would connect with Lee Evans for a 3-yard passing TD with six seconds left in the first half.

The Bills were up 17-3 at halftime.

The second half was when Willis McGahee completely took control of this game. He would score a 2-yard rushing TD 8 minutes into the third quarter, a 30-yard rushing touchdown just over 4 minutes into the fourth quarter and a one-yard rushing TD about 8 minutes into the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks would finally respond after a 21-0 run by McGahee with a 8-yard passing TD from Matt Hasselbeck. A failed two-point conversion would end the game 38-9 in favor of the Buffalo Bills.

McGahee finished the game with 116 yards and 4 touchdowns, which helped ease the pain of Drew Bledsoe’s three interceptions. The Bills held Shaun Alexander to just 39 yards on 13 attempts. Eric Moulds and Lee Evans combined for 14 catches, 163 yards and one TD.

Again, a box score similar to this game would be great for the Buffalo Bills come Monday night. We shall see.

Now that we’ve gotten a glimpse of the past three meetings between these teams, it’s time to go to the fourth: November 18, 2001.

It was Week 10 of the 2001 season that the Seahawks and Buffalo Bills last had a close game, this one decided by three points.

The Buffalo Bills had only won one game when they entered Week 10 in 2001 vs. the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately, their struggles continued and lost a close game that ended 23-20.

The Bills would finish that season just 3-13, so be happy that we aren’t in any position to repeat that this season.

Once again, the ageless wonders Matt Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander were manning the Seahawks’ offense, while the Buffalo Bills were joined by Alex Van Pelt, Travis Henry, Peerless Price, Eric Moulds and Antoine Winfield.

Bills 0 10 3 7 20
Seahawks 3 7 7 6 23

The first half of this game stayed even, with the Seattle Seahawks starting off the scoring with a 40-yard field goal by Rian Lindell — familiar face? The Seahawks would respond in the second quarter with a 7-yard passing touchdown from Matt Hasselbeck to Koren Robinson, giving Seattle a 10-0 lead.

The Buffalo Bills would enjoy a 10-0 run themselves to finish the first half, thanks to a 16-yard passing touchdown from Van Pelt to Peerless Price and a 25-yard field by Jake Arians. The game was tied at halftime.

Each team would score in the third quarter, but the Seahawks would score a one-yard rushing TD by Shaun Alexander and the Bills were limited to a 26-yard field goal by Arians.

Two field goals by the Seahawks in the fourth quarter gave them a 23-13 lead with 3 minutes remaining in the game. Jay Riemersma would connect with Alex Van Pelt for a 6-yard passing touchdown with a little over two minutes remaining, putting the Bills down 3 with enough time left.

Unfortunately, they wouldn’t be able to overcome the deficit as the Seahawks would go on to win 23-20.

Alex Van Pelt finished with a nice game, throwing for 316 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. However, just 69 rushing yards would make it tough to compete against a team that ran over 100 yards thanks to 93 yards from Shaun Alexander.

After going through the last four matchups between these two teams, both teams have come away with 2 wins. Our last matchup of this slide dates back to 2000 and will decide who will take home all the marbles — in regards to their last five meetings.

It was the final game of the 2000 season that saw yet another high-scoring game from both the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks.

The Buffalo Bills entered the final game of the 2000 season against the Seahawks at 7-8 and were trying to give their fans an early Christmas gift with a victory to end the season.

In a game where 65 points were scored between both teams, it was good that 42 of those points came from the Buffalo Bills — who pulled away with a 42-23 victory on December 23, 2000. Because of this victory, the Bills have won 3 of the past 5 meetings between the Bills and Seahawks.

This game was also the last game Doug Flutie played for the Buffalo Bills, before heading to the San Diego Chargers in 2001. Many fans say that the Bills haven’t had a quality quarterback since Doug Flutie and are hoping Tyrod Taylor — who has a long way to go — can be the answer for the Buffalo Bills.

1 2 3 4 T
Seahawks 7 7 3 6 23
Bills 21 7 7 7 42

Doug Flutie would start this game hot, throwing for two touchdown passes — an 11-yarder to Shawn Bryson and an 18-yarder to Peerless Price — in the first 11 and a half minutes of play. However, the Seahawks would answer on the next kickoff with an 81-yard return for a TD by Charlie Rodgers.

Antowain Smith would add a 9-yard rushing touchdown for the Bills, giving them a comfortable 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw one touchdown from each team. Jon Kitna scored a one-yard rushing touchdown 5 minutes into the quarter to bring the Seahawks within one touchdown. However, Flutie would throw his third TD of the game with a 6-yard pass to Jay Riemersma with one minute left in the half.

After a Seahawks’ field goal in the third quarter, Antowain Smith would score his second touchdown of the game as the third quarter winded down — giving the Bills a 35-17 lead at the end of the third.

The fourth quarter wouldn’t give the Seahawks enough time to come back, as Antowain Smith scored his third TD of the game after the Seahawks scored a rushing TD to wrap the game up. The Bills won 42-23 behind big games from Antowain Smith and Doug Flutie.

Smith finished with 147 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Flutie had 366 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Is it possible we see those type of stats from LeSean McCoy and Tyrod Taylor on Monday night? It’s possible.

It’s always fun to revisit the past and see what we were able to do against teams we don’t get to see often. Thanks for taking the time to reminisce with us and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Who was your favorite player that was mentioned in this article? I’m going with Eric Moulds or Lee Evans.
