Broncos release kicker Connor Barth, crown Brandon McManus

The Broncos crowned a de-facto winner in their preseason placekicking battle.

Brandon McManus will win by default. The team released kicker Connor Barth in a move to make roster space for incoming Pro Bowler Evan Mathis.

The move is somewhat of a surprise. Barth joined the team to replace McManus after the latter struggled on field goal duty. With the extra point pushed back, Barth's added accuracy was viewed as an edge.

Denver turned back to McManus to cover a glaring weakness on Barth's kickoffs, though. And with the regime change and a commitment to carrying one kicker, it seems like McManus will handle both duties in 2015.
