Broncos' Cox waives right to hearing

Published Mar. 10, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

Details of sexual assault allegations against Denver Broncos cornerback Perrish Cox will remain secret.

A judge ruled Thursday that a hearing laying out the evidence in the case must be conducted in open court. But Cox's lawyer promptly waived his client's right to a preliminary hearing on the evidence.

That means the case will proceed directly to a trial.

His next court date is an arraignment on May 16, when he's expected to enter a plea.

Cox faces two charges of sexual assault on a helpless victim incapable of appraising her condition, and could face between two years and life in prison if convicted.

Most of the documents in the case have been sealed, including an affidavit containing details of the allegations that led to Cox's arrest in December.
