AP source: Texans hire Herring to coach LBs
A person with knowledge of the decision says the Houston Texans have hired Reggie Herring as their new linebackers coach.
The person confirmed the hiring to The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made by the team. The Houston Chronicle and KRIV-TV first reported the hiring.
Herring, 51, coached linebackers for the Texans from 2002-03 under former coach Dom Capers. He had been the linebackers coach in Dallas since 2008, under former Cowboys coach and new Houston defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
The Texans fired defensive coordinator Frank Bush and three defensive assistants after going 6-10. Phillips was hired two days later.
Also Thursday, Texans linebacker Brian Cushing said on his Twitter account that he underwent arthroscopic surgery on one of his knees.
''Appreciate all the support and love, had to get my patella cleaned up and knee scoped,'' he wrote. ''Was about two years overdue, time for rehab!''
