49ers Trades: No Action as Deadline Nears
With less than 24 hours remaining before the NFL’s trade deadline, the 49ers still have yet to make a move, despite many good arguments for doing so.
The San Francisco 49ers continue to dwell near the bottom of the NFL this season. Their 1-6 record may even be kind to the team’s current, dreadful state.
With no conceivable path to the playoffs and a roster in need of a complete rebuild, it would make sense for GM Trent Baalke to do the one thing he has actually been good at during his 49ers tenure: stockpile draft picks.
A trade before Tuesday’s 1 pm PT deadline would be a good start.
The Niners have several conceivable players whom they could trade. Most notably — and most rumored — are left tackle Joe Staley and wide receiver Torrey Smith. Joe Staley is a top-notch left tackle who could provide an instant benefit to an array of contenders across the league. Meanwhile, Torrey Smith has been linked with the Philadelphia Eagles continually throughout the past week.
Even Colin Kaepernick or Blaine Gabbert could be a tradable asset as Kaepernick can void his deal this offseason and Gabbert will be a free agent. Neither quarterback, however, would command much compensation in return.

Torrey Smith still has several good years left — if the 49ers can use him properly. A new quarterback (perhaps DeShone Kizer) might be able to change that, however. It would make even more sense to trade Staley. While Staley is a 49ers mainstay, he is not getting any younger, deserves to be on a contender, and the 49ers could use an early pick.
