Tackle/guard Anthony Davis suffered a minor concussion in practice on Thursday and has been ruled out for Week 2, per the 49ers website and injury report.
Davis created some controversy just before the start of the regular season. He missed a practice session before the Niners opened up 2016 on Monday Night Football, which led many to believe he might be retiring again.
Previously, the 49ers had been working with Davis at right guard. Second-year pro Trent Brown has solidified himself as the starter at Davis’ former position. Davis did not take over at right guard and is now listed as the primary swing tackle.
Davis’ concussion isn’t supposed to be serious. Listing Davis as unavailable for Sunday’s game is merely precautionary, according to Jennifer Lee Chan of Niners Nation.
He’s unlikely to join the team on the flight back east.
With Davis out, Brown likely moves to the swing tackle role in case of an emergency, per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. Rookie tackle John Theus would play on the right.
The 49ers and Panthers kick off at 1 p.m. ET in Charlotte, North Carolina.
