It is the San Francisco 49ers bye week, but don’t expect Colin Kaepernick to be taking this Sunday off from his activist work. Kaepernick has spent the week and weekend working with youth in Oakland.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick may not be achieving his former success on the football field, but he has remolded himself as a cultural icon off of it. Whatever you think of Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the National Anthem, his work in the community must be respected.

Kaepernick has spent his bye week in Oakland working with youth and helping with instruction on a variety of issues. Kaepernick is clearly not only talking the talk, he is actively working to make a difference.

Number 7 and his girlfriend, radio host Nessa Diab, put together a “Know Your Rights Camp” on Saturday morning, which was attended by around 100 teenagers.

Said Kaepernick about his newfound efforts, per The Mercury News:

“I know what my purpose is. I know what my goal is. My conviction in that is strong enough that it doesn’t matter what anybody says because I know it’s right. And the fact that 100 kids would come out here on a Saturday morning, on their free time to do this, early in the morning, that shows that they believe in this, too.”

Colin Kaepernick’s actions have garnered much respect and much criticism. Whatever your opinion of his statements, at least he is supporting them with action.

Kaepernick is taking a knee, yes, but he is doing much more.
