Report: Lakers considering shutting down rookie Nance Jr. for season

Published Feb. 23, 2016 4:00 p.m. ET

Lakers rookie Larry Nance Jr. may have played his final minutes of the NBA season on Monday after leaving the game early during a loss against the Bucks.

Nance, 23, reportedly had his right knee flare up again on Monday (via ESPN). The LA Times reports that Los Angeles head coach Byron Scott is discussing the decision with head trainer Gary Vitti. The sore right knee was what kept him out for six consecutive games before the All-Star game as well. Here's what he told ESPN about the injury:

“We’ve talked about it, they’ve talked about it, but at the same time, at this point right now, it’s precautionary.”

LA Times reports that Nance does not expect surgery, despite missing time in Oct. 2015 for knee tendinitis.

Known for his impressive vertical leap, Nance impressed during his first game back on Feb. 19 with a monster dunk against the Spurs. But Nance tore his ACL in his right knee while playing collegiate ball for the University of Wyoming. With the Lakers out of the playoff picture, it may not make sense to rush him back.

During his rookie season, Nance averages 5.7 points with 4.9 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. He's shooting .542% from the field.
