Gregg Popovich on nearly coaching Jason Kidd: 'I had this vision'
Once upon a time, Jason Kidd almost signed with the San Antonio Spurs. It was 2003, and the Hall of Fame point guard was an unrestricted free agent taking meetings with potential suitors.
Gregg Popovich loved the idea of having Kidd come in to mentor Tony Parker, and it nearly happened, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Kidd re-signed with the New Jersey Nets and was eventually traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he won a championship in 2011. This is one of the league's all-time "what-if" scenarios, though. Imagine Kidd and Tim Duncan on the same team?
What would the world look like today?
"We tried hard," Popovich said. "I had this vision that he was going to teach Tony about being a point guard and they were going to live together. "It made sense to me; I thought it was pretty logical. Tony is 19 years old (actually 21 at the time), and that's Jason Kidd. Then Jason retires and Tony takes over for him in a while.
