Donatas Motiejunas awaits decision from Houston Rockets

Donatas Motiejunas continues to await a better offer from the Houston Rockets with training camp just weeks away.

After establishing himself as one of the top stretch fours in the league, it’s been a bumpy year for Donatas Motiejunas and the Houston Rockets.

First, it was the back injury that caused Motiejunas to miss most of the 2015-16 season. In the midst of rehabbing, the Rockets traded him to the Detroit Pistons for a 1st round pick. Unfortunately, Motiejunas failed his physical that resulting in a voided trade.

Now with training camp only a few weeks away Motiejunas’ time in Houston is coming to an end. According to Calvin Watkins of ESPN, the Rockets are not doing enough to resign Motiejunas.

Despite his delay to the 2016 season, Motiejunas was still a valuable member of the Rockets when healthy. In 37 games, he averaged 6.2 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 44 percent from the field.

The Rockets had offered the Lithuanian big man a one-year extension in June, but Motiejunas has yet to sign. Both he and his agent are holding out for a better deal from the Rockets. Similar to the way Tristan Thompson did last summer with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

However, unlike Thompson, the Rockets have two other stretch fours who are capable of replacing Motiejunas. With Michael Beasley returning and the addition of Ryan Anderson, perhaps Motiejunas’ service in Houston are now less desirable.
