Yanks' Gardner heads to disabled list

Published Apr. 18, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner is going on the 15-day disabled list with an ailing right elbow.

New York manager Joe Girardi says he believes Gardner was injured while making a tumbling catch Tuesday night against Minnesota. The speedster was a late scratch from the lineup Wednesday after feeling discomfort when he took some swings in the indoor cage about an hour before the game.

Gardner, who is left-handed, had an MRI that showed a strained muscle just above his elbow. He also has a bruise.

Looking for a fresh arm for the bullpen, New York will recall right-hander Cody Eppley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Eppley was claimed off waivers from Texas on April 5.

Girardi says Andruw Jones, Raul Ibanez and Eduardo Nunez will fill in for Gardner in left.
