Yankees C McCann out of lineup with bruised toe

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:32 p.m. ET

TORONTO (AP) Yankees catcher Brian McCann is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, still suffering from the bruised big left toe that forced him to leave Tuesday's 3-2 win.

McCann, who leads the Yankees with a .500 average and leads the AL with 10 runs, was replaced by Austin Romine in the ninth inning Tuesday. Romine will start Wednesday against Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ.

Manager Joe Girardi said McCann would test his toe in the weight room before the game, and wouldn't rule out using the seven-time All-Star as a pinch hitter.

''My preference would be to give him the day off,'' Girardi said. ''We'll see what the game dictates.''

Both McCann and Girardi said they felt ''fortunate'' there was no break after X-rays Tuesday came back negative.

Girardi said infielder Ronald Torreyes, who is starting at shortstop Wednesday, would be the emergency catcher.
