Verlander finally allows hit in 6th inning vs. KC

Detroit's Justin Verlander threw 5 2-3 hitless innings Friday night before finally giving up a hit in his first start since throwing a no-hitter.

Melky Cabrera's RBI triple foiled his bid to become the second pitcher to throw back-to-back no-hitters.

Verlander, who held Toronto without a hit Saturday, was trying to equal Cincinnati's Johnny Vander Meer, who threw two straight no-hitters in 1938.

Verlander walked two but allowed no hits until Cabrera sent a line drive to the gap in right-center field in the sixth. Right fielder Brennan Boesch had no chance to make the play, and the home crowd at Detroit's Comerica Park gave Verlander a standing ovation as he composed himself before facing the next hitter.
