Derek Norris doesn’t usually play first base for the Padres -- he’s their starting catcher. Thursday was only his third time playing first base this season and the fourth time in his career. He made a good play -- a great one considering how much time he’s spent at first -- with the game on the line in the bottom of the ninth inning of the team's game against the Cardinals.

Norris, who went 0 for 5 at the plate, told MLB.com that he was happy to be able to contribute in that way, if not with his bat. His diving stop was good for an out and kept a Cardinals runner from possibly scoring the game-winning run.

Manager Pat Murphy lauded Norris for the play:

“It's just a great play, and great poise, to get the out. It made a difference."
