Longtime Astros scout Stan Benjamin dies at 95

Published Dec. 24, 2009 1:35 p.m. ET

Stan Benjamin, a Houston Astros scout for nearly 40 years, has died. He was 95.

The team said he died early Thursday on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Benjamin evaluated talent on the amateur and professional level. He joined the Astros in 1965. He scouted American League East clubs for several seasons before working as the team's scouting supervisor for the Northeast.

Astros president Tal Smith called Benjamin a ``vital cog'' in the organization and a ``keen judge of talent.''

Funeral arrangements have yet to be made.
