In one play Sunday afternoon, Jeff Francoeur just about summed up the Philadelphia Phillies’ entire season.

It’s been a rough season for the Phillies who are among baseball’s worst teams, and it must be even worse for a veteran like Francoeur, a once can’t-miss prospect who’s bounced around baseball looking for work. On Sunday, Francoeur’s season might have hit rock-bottom.

The 31-year-old outfielder has a tremendous throwing arm, which makes his blooper Sunday even more cringe-worthy. Washington Nationals outfielder Dennard Span laced a line drive down the right-field line that Francoeur chased after. First, Francoeur stumbled a bit on his way to getting to the ball. Then, as he picked up the ball, he dropped it. After another stumble, he finally picked up the ball, which is when disaster struck.

Francoeur went to throw the ball into the infield, and that’s when one of baseball’s worst fails of the season occurred.

Maybe he’s just used to pitching now?

Francoeur got to redeem himself a little bit at the plate with a pair of RBIs, but the Nationals went on to win the game — the first of a double-header — 3-2.
