Game 4 of ALCS in rain delay

One day after the Tigers and Rangers played in pristine October weather, Game 4 of the American League Championship Series was stuck in a rain delay Wednesday afternoon.

A steady drizzle began falling in Metro Detroit shortly before noon, and it continued as the scheduled first pitch time of 4:19 p.m. ET approached. The most recent estimate by baseball officials was for a 5:30 p.m. start time on FOX.

With rain in the forecast for the next two days, one official indicated that Major League Baseball would make every effort to play Game 4 on Wednesday.

The Tigers, who trail 2-1 in the series, would stand to gain the most from a postponement. Detroit ace Justin Verlander can pitch Thursday on regular rest. If Game 4 is postponed until then, he would have a chance to even the series at two games apiece rather than pitch Game 5.

Under that arrangement, Rick Porcello (currently scheduled to pitch Game 4) would likely be bumped back to Game 5. The Rangers probably want to face Porcello sooner rather than later, because he is so similar to the sinkerball pitcher, Doug Fister, whom they saw in Game 3.
