Does Jason Heyward need to change his approach at the plate?

Published Apr. 23, 2015 12:50 a.m. ET

Jason Heyward isn't exactly off to a blazing start with the Cardinals. The right-fielder is hitting just .193 through 13 games and although the sample size is small, some may still be wondering, when will Heyward start hitting.

There are plenty of theories going around regarding Heyward's hitting approach, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch thinks that perhaps Heyward is being too aggressive at the plate.

“In 2013-2014, Heyward averaged about 4 pitches per plate appearance, and that patience was a factor in his 11 percent walk rate in 2013, and his 10.3 percent walk rate last season.”

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch thinks 2015 has been a different story:

• Heyward has drawn one walk in 53 plate appearances. Heyward has walked every 9.1 PA during his MLB career.”

• Heyward is averaging 3.72 pitches per plate appearance; that's the lowest of his career.”
