Dodgers-Nats rained out, doubleheader Thursday

The game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed because of rain.

The teams will make it up as part of a doubleheader Thursday beginning at 1:05 p.m.

Word of the game's postponement was tweeted by the Dodgers about 1:40 p.m., but wasn't announced by the Nationals until four hours later.

According to Washington manager Davey Johnson, the teams agreed earlier in the day on a postponement, but Major League Baseball wanted them to try and play Wednesday night. The Yankees and Orioles had a delay of more than four hours in the start of their game on Tuesday night.

''The commissioner's office wanted us to wait - so it was overruled,'' Johnson said. ''I guess they had a little debacle in New York last night, so they wanted to avoid that.''

Fewer than half the Nationals players were in the clubhouse at the time the postponement was announced. Many area roads were flooded, making access to the ballpark difficult.

''It was kind of a no-brainer as far as the Nationals were concerned,'' Johnson said. ''We didn't want to play on an unsafe field - and we couldn't get here to begin with.''

The Dodgers never opened their clubhouse to the media, and a request to speak with Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly about the postponement was declined. Their team bus never left for the ballpark.

Washington's pitchers for Thursday's doubleheader are right-hander Chien-Ming Wang (2-3) and left-hander Ross Detwiler (2-5). Los Angeles' pitchers are left-hander Dana Eveland (1-0) and right-hander Chad Billingsley (10-10). The Dodgers have not announced the order of their starters.

The Dodgers have a game in San Francisco on Friday night.
