A's call up Eric Surkamp to start

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:59 p.m. ET

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Athletics placed left-hander Sean Manaea on the 15-day disabled list with a strained (left) forearm on Tuesday and recalled left-hander Eric Surkamp from Triple-A Nashville.

Manaea underwent an MRI earlier Tuesday that showed a minor muscle injury, A's manager Bob Melvin said.

''I think I'll be good in 15 days,'' Manaea said. ''I don't have any negative thoughts.''

The 24-year-old, who made his major league debut in April, was 2-3 with a 4.17 ERA over his last six starts after going 0-1 with an 11.37 ERA in his first three starts.

''All things were pointing in a good direction for him, so this is a little bit of a setback,'' Melvin said. ''When you walk out there and what you hear is `forearm,' you're always to an extent thinking the worst, but that's not the case here, so we'll look at the bright side of it.''

Surkamp, who was scheduled to start Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers, is 0-3 with a 6.41 ERA in three previous stints with the A's.
