Rory McIlroy is shocked by how bad America's presidential race is

Part of what makes Rory McIlroy so great is the fact that he never shies away from saying exactly how he feels. From zinging Tiger Woods on Twitter about his skinny calves to firing back at Golf Channel's Brandel Chamblee regarding his overly intense work ethic, McIlroy speaks his mind and doesn't look back.

That was evident on Wednesday during his press conference at the WGC-Cadillac Championship -- an event taking place at Trump National Doral in Miami. Given his headline-grabbing comments on a seemingly daily basis, Donald Trump was unsurprisingly the subject of questions Wednesday.

McIlroy was asked what his thoughts were on the tournament being held at Trump's course, to which he swiftly responded by taking a subtle shot at the Republican front-runner.

"I'm not American," McIlroy said with a big smile on his face, joined by applause and laughs from the press crowd. "I mean, he's not going to be the leader of my country so it doesn't bother me too much."

Although he's from Northern Ireland, McIlroy has ties to the U.S. He owns a home in Florida, and his fiancee, Erica Stoll, is American. He also spends a great deal of time on American turf during the PGA Tour swing, so he pays attention to the country's political situation.

That's not to say he's pleased with what he's seen.

"I thought I knew what politics were until I started to watch some of these presidential debates," he said. "I'm not saying that the political system in Northern Ireland is too strong at the moment either, but it's shocking."

It almost seems like McIlroy is happy he doesn't have to bear the burden of having to vote this year.

"I can't vote, and if I were to vote, I'm not sure I would want to vote for any of the candidates."
