Impact With Irv Smith expected to miss time due to a high-ankle sprain, the NFC North-leading Vikings swung a deal with one of their division rivals to secure a high-quality replacement in Hockenson, who should sit atop the tight end depth chart even after Smith returns. Hockenson had been the co-No. 2 option in the passing game for Detroit this season behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and was off to a strong start through seven games, producing a 26-395-3 line on 43 targets. He joins a similar situation in a Minnesota passing game dominated by another elite receiver in Justin Jefferson, but it's conceivable Hockenson could quickly challenge Adam Thielen (knee) for the No. 2 role. The tight end is due $9.39 million in 2023 after Detroit exercised his fifth-year team option earlier this year, but the Vikings could look to negotiate a longer-term extension with Hockenson next spring depending on how he performs over the back half of this season.

Team-high receiving yardage total Hockenson secured three of four targets for 80 yards in the Lions' 31-27 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
Impact Hockenson's yardage total paced the Lions on the afternoon and was largely the result of a game-long 58-yard grab in the first quarter on a drive that culminated in a D'Andre Swift touchdown reception. Hockenson's tally through the air was also his second highest of the season, and he's recorded multiple catches in six of his first seven games. He'll aim to play an integral role once again against the Packers in a Week 9 NFC North home clash.

Impact After kicking off Week 8 prep with no on-field activity, Hockenson bumped up to a capped session Thursday and now has one more practice to get back to full before the Lions potentially give him a designation for Sunday's game versus the Dolphins. The offense as a whole is getting healthier with No. 1 RB D'Andre Swift (ankle/shoulder) avoiding any practice limitations this week, though top WR Amon-Ra St. Brown remains in the concussion protocol. If both are able to play this weekend, Hockenson, if active, would have more room to operate underneath.

Impact Hockenson previously dealt with hip and foot injuries this season, but he's been able to suit up in all six of the Lions' games, earning between 76 and 91 percent of the offensive snaps on each occasion. With a new health concern in tow, his status should be watched closely as the week rolls along to ensure he'll be available this Sunday against the Dolphins. If active this weekend, Hockenson will be joined by top running back D'Andre Swift (ankle/shoulder) for the first time since Week 3 and likely wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (concussion), who were full and limited participants, respectively, at Wednesday's session.

Impact Hockenson made a few nice catches, but Detroit's five total turnovers killed its most promising possessions and, ultimately, Hockenson's chances of finding the end zone. It probably didn't help him that the continued absences of D'Andre Swift (shoulder) and DJ Chark (ankle) were compounded by the loss of Amon-Ra St. Brown (concussion) in the first half. The resulting defensive focus on Hockenson seemingly led to the likes of Kalif Raymond, Brock Wright, Craig Reynolds, and Tom Kennedy seeing most of Jared Goff's pass attempts. However, with Swift and St. Brown potentially returning in Week 8 against Miami, it is possible the Detroit offense could get back on track sooner than later.
