Impact Out of necessity due to several wide receiver injuries, the Browns had Felton focused on running routes rather than running the ball. With the return of players from injury, the Browns can allocate more of Felton's time to the backfield. Cleveland's running game took on a new level of significance Thursday following the increase in Deshaun Watson's suspension from six to 11 games. The backs figure to be paramount in offensive game plans while the team adjusts to life without its No. 1 quarterback.

Impact Ja'Marcus Bradley handled both chores in last week's preseason opener against the Jaguars, and now it looks like Felton's turn to replace the injured Jakeem Grant (Achilles). He was the primary punt returner and the second kick returner behind Anthony Schwartz in 2021. Impact Felton is the first line, but D'Ernest Johnson, Anthony Schwartz, Ja'Marcus Bradley and Mike Harley could also be used in practice and preseason games. Felton's roster status has improved considerably since the start of camp. After the Browns drafted Jerome Ford, adding to an already crowded running back room, the hybrid back/receiver was on the bubble. Since then, injuries to several wide receivers gave Felton plenty of reps at receiver, and now Grant's injury opens an opportunity for him in the return game and seemingly secures a roster spot.

Impact Billed has hybrid back/wideout when drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 Draft out of UCLA, Felton finished the season with more catches (18) than rushing attempts (seven). He served primarily as a pass catcher when used on offense, but he played only 130 snaps (12.4 percent share) on that unit and was mostly used in the return game, both punts and kickoffs. He had a couple of muffs in Week 14, prompting the Browns to use others as the primary returner in each role. He's under contract for 2022, but there's little chance for him to move up the running back depth chart. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt will return, while D'Ernest Johnson, who played well when the top two backs were injured, is a restricted free agent.
