Vince Velasquez - Sharp in spring outing Velasquez allowed one hit and stuck out three while walking none across three scoreless innings Wednesday against the Orioles in Grapefruit League action.
Impact Velasquez made his second appearance as a Pirate, and he's now allowed only one earned run across five innings. He did surrender two free passes in his opening start, but he showed improved control against the Orioles. Velasquez signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh this offseason and is expected to open the campaign in the rotation.

Robert Stephenson - Throws bullpen session Stephenson (elbow) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, according to MLB.com.
Impact Stephenson is slated to throw one more bullpen session before being re-evaluated. Conceivably, he could be ready for a Grapefruit League appearance at that point, which would hopefully give him enough time to get ready for Opening Day. If healthy, Stephenson projects as a primary setup man for Pittsburgh.

Pirates acquire INF/OF Mark Mathias from Rangers The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired infielder/outfielder Mark Mathias from the Texas Rangers on Wednesday for a player to be named later.
MARCH 8 • KANSASCITY.COM
Mark Mathias - Dealt to Bucs The Pirates acquired Mathias from the Rangers on Wednesday in exchange for a player to be named later.
Impact Texas moved Mathias off its 40-man roster over the weekend, but the 28-year-old utility man was quickly able to find a new organization. Mathias hit well at the Triple-A level and down the stretch with Texas last season, but his track record suggests that his hot run at the plate is unlikely to carry over into 2023. He'll compete for a reserve role with the rebuilding Pirates.
MARCH 8 • ROTOWIRE
Max Kranick - Goes on IL The Pirates placed Kranick (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
Impact The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for Mark Mathias, whom the Pirates acquired from Texas on Wednesday. Kranick isn't expected to return until late in the season, if at all, as he recovers from June 2022 Tommy John surgery.

Termarr Johnson - Will miss at least six total weeks Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk told reporters that Johnson (hamstring) is expected to miss at least six weeks from his original injury date of Feb. 21, Jason Mack...
Impact Johnson strained his right hamstring while taking part in MLB camp. The fourth pick of the 2022 MLB Draft will be out of action for at least another few weeks, and the Pirates will certainly not rush one of their most important young players back onto the field. There should be more updates on Johnson's status in the coming weeks.
MARCH 8 • ROTOWIRE
Jarlín García - Extent of injury still unclear Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that tests on Garcia's left arm revealed no structural damage to his shoulder or elbow, but the team has yet to hone...
Impact For now, Garcia's injury is being labeled as "left arm soreness," but more definitive word on the precise nature and extent of the issue should become available within the coming days when he undergoes additional testing. Tomczyk noted that Garcia is unable to grip a baseball at the moment, so the reliever likely won't be ready to throw for at least a couple of weeks and looks to be at risk of beginning the season on the injured list.

Lolo Sánchez - Reassigned to minor-league camp The Pirates reassigned Sanchez to minor-league camp Tuesday.
Impact The move hardly comes as a surprise, as the 23-year-old outfield prospect has only reached Double-A ball so far in his career. In his 66 games with Double-A Altoona last season, Sanchez slashed .231/.343/.330 through 254 plate appearances with 24 RBI and seven stolen bases.
MARCH 7 • ROTOWIRE
Matt Gorski - Sent out to minors camp Gorski was reassigned Tuesday to the minor-league side of Pirates camp.
Impact Gorski posted an impressive .956 OPS with 24 home runs and 21 stolen bases in 81 games last summer in the minors, but he is 25 years old and has taken only two plate appearances above the Double-A level. The outfielder was 1-for-5 with three strikeouts through three Grapefruit League games this spring.
MARCH 7 • ROTOWIRE
Henry Davis - Reassigned to minors camp Davis was reassigned Tuesday to the minor-league side of Pirates camp.
Impact Lolo Sanchez and Matt Gorski were also sent out. Following some earlier cuts on Tuesday morning, the Pirates are now down to 59 players in major-league camp. Davis has battled multiple injuries as a pro but boasts an .890 OPS in 67 career minor-league games and could arrive in the bigs at some point later this season.

Liover Peguero - Reassigned to minors camp Peguero was reassigned Tuesday to the minor-league side of Pirates camp.
Impact Peguero was called up for his MLB debut last June but appeared in only one game with Pittsburgh. The 22-year-old infielder slashed .259/.305/.387 with 10 home runs and 28 stolen bases in 121 games last summer at Double-A.
MARCH 7 • ROTOWIRE
Jared Jones - Sent to minor-league camp Jones was reassigned Tuesday to the minor-league side of Pirates camp.
Impact Jones went as the No. 44 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, but he has struggled to a 4.63 ERA through 188.2 professional innings, all at the High-A level or below. The 21-year-old does tend to miss a lot of bats, but his command definitely needs some fine tuning.
MARCH 7 • ROTOWIRE
Kyle Nicolas - Reassigned to minor-league camp Nicolas was reassigned Tuesday to the minor-league side of Pirates camp.
Impact No surprise here given that Nicolas spent all of 2022 at Double-A Altoona. The 24-year-old right-hander had thrown three scoreless innings so far in Grapefruit League play and could make the jump to Triple-A Indianapolis to kick off the 2023 campaign.
MARCH 7 • ROTOWIRE
Malcom Nunez - Reassigned to minors camp Nunez was reassigned Tuesday to the minor-league side of Pirates camp.
Impact Liover Peguero, Kyle Nicolas and Jared Jones were the other reassigned players in this round of cuts. Nunez should push to make his MLB debut at some point in 2023 after posting an .833 OPS with 23 home runs and 88 RBI in 119 games last year between Double-A and Triple-A.
MARCH 7 • ROTOWIRE
Andrew McCutchen - Re-enters spring lineup McCutchen (hand) will serve as the Pirates' designated hitter and No. 3 batter in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays.
Impact McCutchen exited early in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Twins due to hand soreness, but as anticipated, his removal from that contest proved to be merely a precaution. At least at the start of the season, the 36-year-old should handle a near-everyday role as he opens his second stint in Pittsburgh, with McCutchen expected to move between the corner outfield and designated hitter.
MARCH 7 • ROTOWIRE
Who's (eventually) on first a huge question for Pirates and power-hitting prospect Malcom Nunez Malcolm Nunez arrived from the Cardinals organization with plenty of power potential. He’s starting to realize more of it.
