Paul Sewald - Problems with delivery Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Sewald is having issues with his delivery, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. ""There's something that's going on with his delivery," Lovullo said...
Impact Lovullo made those comments moments after Wednesday's win in which Sewald, tasked with closing out a two-run lead, allowed a run on three walks and a hit before being removed for Ryan Thompson, who picked up his first save of the season. The manager plans to take time to review the situation and feels there are "really good candidates" in house to replace Sewald as the closer, if that's what Lovullo decides. The names under consideration are likely Thompson, Kevin Ginkel and A.J. Puk.

Jake McCarthy - Records three hits, steals base McCarthy went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run and a stolen base Wednesday in a 5-4 win against the Nationals.
Impact McCarthy scored the first run of the game in the third inning as a result of a two-out triple and a MacKenzie Gore wild pitch. The outfielder finished with his second straight three-hit contest and his third multi-hit performance over his past five games. Over that span, McCarthy is batting a blistering .545 (12-for-22) with a double, two triples, five runs and two thefts.

Ryan Thompson - Notches first save Thompson earned a save against Washington on Wednesday, issuing a walk and striking out a batter over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning.
Impact Paul Sewald got a chance at a save with Arizona up three runs entering the ninth frame, but he retired only one batter while walking three and allowing a double. Thompson then came in to put out the fire and did so successfully despite allowing an inherited runner to score on a passed ball and issuing an intentional walk. After the game, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was non-committal about Sewald remaining the team's closer, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Thompson would get the next crack at the role if a change is made. The right-hander has been very successful in a setup role this season with a 1.81 ERA, 19 holds and 32:5 K:BB, yet both Kevin Ginkel and A.J. Puk -- each of whom pitched before the ninth frame Wednesday -- have more closing experience and would be likely candidates to step in as closer, temporarily or otherwise, if Sewald is moved out of the role.

Paul Sewald - Could be on shaky ground as closer Sewald earned a hold against the Nationals on Wednesday, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks over one-third of an inning.
Impact Sewald was brought in for a save opportunity with Arizona up three runs in the ninth inning but couldn't find the control to close things out. He threw just nine of 24 pitches for strikes and issued three free passes along with a double before being pulled having recorded just one out. Sewald was credited with a hold after Ryan Thompson entered and finished off the frame, but that speaks more to the flawed nature of the hold stat than to the reliever's effectiveness. Sewald had a rough July, blowing his first three and his final two save opportunities during the month. He did rack up five straight successful saves in between, but the veteran closer nonetheless finished July with an ugly 10.80 ERA across 10 frames. Per Jack Sommers of SI.com, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo attributed Sewald's issues to "something that's going on with his delivery" but didn't tip his hand about whether there'd be a change to the team's closer role. "I know everybody wants to know, what's the closer situation. Are you going to dump him out of the closer role. That's not my priority with Paul right now. My priority is to find out if he is getting blocked by some sort of a delivery problem. That's our job, that's my job. Then I'll take the next necessary steps from there," Lovullo stated.

Zac Gallen - Notches third straight victory Gallen (9-5) earned the win over Washington on Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six innings.
Impact Gallen gave up a run in the fourth inning but otherwise silenced the Nationals for his second straight quality start and third straight victory. Since giving up a season-high seven runs (six earned) over 3.2 frames against Toronto on July 14, Gallen has surrendered just four runs over his subsequent 17 innings. Despite that solid span, the right-hander's control had been shaky coming into Wednesday, as he had issued nine free passes across his previous two outings. However, he may have settled those concerns against Washington by issuing just one walk in the win.

Joc Pederson - Resting against lefty Pederson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Impact Pederson will hit the bench for a third straight game, with all of those absences coming against southpaws. The 32-year-old continues to be deployed as a strict platoon player, but he's raked against righties this season, slashing .286/.387/.532 (155 wRC+) in those matchups.
JULY 31, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Gabriel Moreno - Nursing wrist injury Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Moreno is dealing with a sore left wrist after being struck by a foul ball Tuesday but will be available off the bench for Wednesday's game...
Impact Since Moreno started behind the plate in Tuesday night's 17-0 win and the Diamondbacks are closing their series with the Nationals with a day game, he would have been a candidate to sit Wednesday even if he was 100 percent healthy. The wrist issue will provide further reason for the Diamondbacks to give Moreno the day off, though the injury shouldn't be anything that costs him time moving forward. The expectation is that Moreno will be back behind the plate in Friday's series opener in Pittsburgh following Thursday's team off day.
JULY 31, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Alek Thomas - Sitting against southpaw Thomas is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Impact Thomas will take a seat for the third time in five games, with all of those absences coming against left-handed pitching. The lefty-hitting Thomas still appears to have a grasp on a strong-side platoon role.
JULY 31, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Jake McCarthy - Seeing steady at-bats McCarthy will start in center field and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Impact Though McCarthy doesn't have a direct path to an everyday role, Arizona has now been able to squeeze him into the lineup for five straight games while giving four days off to Joc Pederson, three to Alek Thomas and one apiece to Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel during that stretch. All of the absences for Pederson, Thomas and Carroll have come against left-handed pitching, so McCarthy at least looks to be viewed as a short-side platoon option, even though he's a left-handed hitter himself. McCarthy has helped his case for holding down a semi-regular role by going 9-for-18 with a stolen base, four runs and three RBI over the previous four contests.
JULY 31, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Geraldo Perdomo - Taking seat Wednesday Perdomo is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Impact Perdomo will take a seat in the day game after a night game, paving the way for Kevin Newman to draw a start at shortstop. In Tuesday's 17-0 win, Perdomo tied a season high with three hits while scoring twice and driving in two runs in five at-bats.

Gabriel Moreno - Receiving afternoon off Moreno is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Impact The Diamondbacks will hand out rest to multiple regulars for the matinee contest after Tuesday night's 17-0 dismantling of the Nationals. Jose Herrera will fill in behind the plate for Moreno, who was one of several Arizona batters to get in on the act Tuesday with two hits, three RBI and two runs over his three at-bats.

Geraldo Perdomo - Logs three hits, two RBI in win Perdomo went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 17-0 win over the Nationals.
Impact Perdomo joined the Diamondbacks' 22-hit attack with his second straight multi-hit game. He drove in Arizona's third run with a single then doubled home the team's 13th tally. Following an eight-game stretch during which Perdomo batted .115 (3-for-26) without an RBI, the shortstop and ninth-place hitter has driven in five runs over the last four contests.

Ketel Marte - Another multi-hit effort Marte went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 17-0 win over Washington.
Impact Like the summer months in Arizona, Marte's bat is sizzling with multiple hits in 10 of his last 14 starts. He's gone 24-for-53 (.453) with seven home runs during that run. The hot bat stretches further back to the beginning of June; Marte is slashing .359/.439/.653 with 14 homers and 43 RBI over 47 games since June 2.

Ryne Nelson - Brilliant in win over Nationals Nelson (8-6) got the win over the Nationals on Tuesday, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out nine over seven scoreless innings.
Impact Nelson was staked an 11-0 lead by the end of the third inning but never let up one bit. Both his nine strikeouts and seven innings pitched tied season highs and it was his second outing of the season of at least five scoreless frames. He gave up one run or fewer of four of his six starts in July, leading to a 2.41 ERA and .211 BAA. He also went at least five innings in every start, which is something he's wasn't able to do earlier in the season. The 26-year-old now owns a 4.53 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 79:26 K:BB in 105.1 innings and will look to keep rolling against the Pirates to begin next week.

Kevin Newman - Swipes bag Tuesday Newman went 2-for-5 with a steal and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Nationals.
Impact Newman logged his second straight two-hit game and swiped his fourth bag of the year and his first since June 13. He got the start at first base, but his path to extra playing time may have been closed off by the Diamondbacks' acquisition of Josh Bell from the Marlins on Tuesday to fill the void left by Christian Walker's oblique injury. Newman will continue to play a utility role off the bench for the most part, and he is now slashing .277/.307/.385 with two homers, 22 RBI, 31 runs and a 10:32 BB:K in 229 plate appearances.

Eugenio Suárez - Three-homer day in big win Suarez went 4-for-6 with three homers, five RBI and four runs scored in Tuesday's 17-0 win over the Nationals.
Impact Suarez kicked things off with a two-run blast off Patrick Corbin in the first inning. He followed that up with solo shots in the sixth and seventh for his second career three-homer game. Coming into July, Suarez had just six homers and 32 RBI while batting .196 through 80 games. He's completely turned it around in July, slashing .326/.394/.744 with 10 homers and 27 RBI in 24 games. He's the first Diamondbacks player with more than nine homers and 25 RBI in a month since Eduardo Escobar did it in 2019. For the season, the 32-year-old is now slashing .227/.307/.414 with 34 extra-base hits, 59 RBI, 49 runs, two steals and a 37:117 BB:K in 414 plate appearances.
