West Florida gets first D-I win, beats North Alabama 24-19

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — Sam Vaughn threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, and Division II West Florida played its first game against a D-I school and won, 24-19 against North Alabama on Saturday night.

Vaughn was 16-of-28 passing for 172 yards. Chris Schwarz added 107 yards rushing on 14 carries for the Argonauts.

Christian Lopez was 25-of-31 passing for 261 yards and one touchdown, but he was sacked three times for North Alabama. Damon Cox ran for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Vaughn ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter and connected with Quentin Randolph on an 18-yard TD pass early in the fourth to give the Argonauts a 24-13 lead.

Cox's 6-yard touchdown run made it 24-19 with 6:25 left. North Alabama then forced West Florida to punt on its next possession, but Dwain Smith fumbled the punt and the Argonauts' Anthony Johnson recovered the ball.

The Lions' last drive stalled at the Argonaut 26 when Lopez's Hail Mary pass attempt fell incomplete.

It's the first season for North Alabama (3-3) as a D-I program.
