Man Utd player ratings vs Arsenal: Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu screamers stun Premier League leaders as Michael Carrick's courageous tactics pay off
Manchester United stunned Arsenal on Sunday by beating the Gunners 3-2 at the Emirates to make it two wins out of two for caretaker manager Michael Carrick. A Lisandro Martinez own goal gifted Arsenal the lead but the visitors hit back through Bryan Mbeumo. Patrick Dorgu and substitute Matheus Cunha then scored a pair of spectacular goals to take all three points and dent Arsenal's title hopes.
Arsenal dominated the opening exchanges but needed a slice of luck to open the scoring. Bukayo Saka clipped the ball back to Martin Odegaard in the penalty area and his shot was inadvertently flicked past Senne Lammens in the Manchester United goal by Martinez.
United responded well to the early setback, with Bruno Fernandes firing two chances wide. The equaliser then came from Bryan Mbeumo, who also profited from some good fortune. The Cameroon star pounced on a poor back from Martin Zubimendi and kept his composure to round goalkeeper David Raya and slot home to make it 1-1.
The game then sparked into life early in the second half as Dorgu lit up the Emirates with a stunning strike. Fernandes fed Dorgu the ball, and he unleashed an unstoppable volley that flew past Raya and into the net off the bar from just outside the penalty area.
Mikel Arteta responded by making four changes to his team, sending on Ben White, Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino in search of an equaliser. Noni Madueke followed shortly afterwards as the Gunners struggled to carve out clear-cut chances.
Perhaps inevitably, the equaliser came from a set piece. Merino bundled home from close range after Lammens failed to punch clear a corner to make it 2-2. Yet the response from the Red Devils was swift and deadly. Cunha picked up possession and curled another unstoppable finish past Raya to secure a memorable three points for the visitors.
GOAL rates Manchester United's players from the Emirates...
Goalkeeper & Defence
Senne Lammens (7/10):
Made a good save from a Martin Zubimendi header in the first half and Saka in the second but was crowded out at the corner from which Arsenal made it 2-2.
Diogo Dalot (6/10):
A really solid afternoon at right-back and enjoyed a good tussle with Leandro Trossard.
Harry Maguire (8/10):
Rock solid at the back, where his aerial ability was needed, and brought the ball out of defence well before Dorgu hammered the ball home.
Lisandro Martinez (6/10):
Inadvertently handed Arsenal the lead by flicking past Lammens as he tangled with Timber. Great tackle in stoppage time to prevent an Arsenal attack.
Luke Shaw (7/10):
Did a very decent job up against Saka down the left for United.
Midfield
Casemiro (8/10):
Into his last few months as a Manchester United player but this was an excellent performance. Commanding throughout and seemed to be everywhere at times.
Kobbie Mainoo (7/10):
Another start for Mainoo and a disciplined performance. Seems to be growing in confidence but looked tired in the second half, perhaps unsurprising given his lack of game time recently.
Attack
Amad Diallo (6/10):
Not his most effective game in a Manchester United shirt but provided some good deliveries that troubled Raya.
Bruno Fernandes (6/10):
Will feel he should have been on the scoresheet but wasted two great chances in the first half.
Bryan Mbeumo (8/10):
Gave William Saliba and Gabriel a tough afternoon and showed great composure to round David Raya and equalise for his ninth goal of the season.
Patrick Dorgu (8/10):
Fairly quiet in the first half but scored a sensational goal to make it 2-1 to United.
Subs & Manager
Matheus Cunha (8/10):
Came off the bench and scored the winner with a wonderful curling strike.
Benjamin Sesko (6/10):
Tried in vain to hammer the ball off the line but couldn't prevent Arsenal making it 2-2.
Noussair Mazraoui (N/A)
Only given the last few minutes.
Michael Carrick (8/10):
Kept faith with the same XI that beat Manchester City and oversaw another very impressive win, courageously urging his players to bomb forward late on. His decision to swap Mbeumo for Cunha mid-way through the second half also paid off handsomely as the Brazilian scored a brilliant winner.
