'I was at rock bottom' - Marc Bernal celebrates 'happiest day of my life' after signing Barcelona contract as teenager opens up on 'tough year' out with ACL injury
A new chapter for Marc Bernal
Bernal marked a major milestone and began a new chapter in his Barca career after signing a contract with the Catalan giants until 2029. The 18-year-old shared his story and his happiness with the media during the presentation. Still just 18, Bernal carried himself with the maturity of a seasoned professional, especially after returning from a serious knee injury sustained against Rayo Vallecano last year.
"It's the most special day and I would say the happiest of my life. I hope for many more years at the club," Bernal said, expressing gratitude for Barcelona’s unwavering support during his recovery. "I was at rock bottom and it was a huge help to feel that confidence. It was very special for me and meant a lot to me and my family, and I owe it all to the club of my life."
Bernal opens up on dealing with ACL injury
The Spanish midfielder suffered a severe ACL tear along with meniscus damage during a La Liga match in August 2024, just after impressing in the first three matchdays of the season. The injury sidelined him for over a year, leaving him physically limited and emotionally drained, especially during the initial month when even getting out of bed was a challenge.
Reflecting on this period, Bernal said: "It's been a very tough year. The worst part is at the beginning, when you can't get out of bed for the first month. You appreciate things you didn't realise before, but together, they all made it easier for me. My teammates, coaches, family, my physiotherapist Borja... and even Hansi Flick came to visit me. I'm very grateful to him."
Bernal’s comeback came against Valencia, where he immediately made an impact with an assist for Robert Lewandowski in a commanding 6-0 victory. Despite the bright return, he remains measured about his progression.
"Now it's not important to play, but to get into rhythm, everything in its own time; it's a process. The best Marc Bernal will be revealed when it's time," he said.
Barcelona set €500m release clause in Bernal's contract
Barcelona have officially secured the future of midfielder Bernal with the recent extension while setting a colossal €500 million release clause in his contract. The deal, signed alongside president Joan Laporta, and sporting director Deco, underscores the club's high commitment to the player. Despite having missed over a year due to a significant injury, Bernal is still viewed as one of La Masia's most promising prospects. While the coaching staff is carefully managing his playing time to protect his fitness, Bernal is projected to quickly become a pivotal figure in Barcelona's midfield rotation.
Bernal excited for Champions League action
Coach Flick's hopes have been lifted by the returns of Lamine Yamal and Marc Bernal, especially since Barcelona remains without key players like Fermin Lopez and Gavi. With these midfield injuries, Bernal is expected to earn substantial playing minutes right away. The young player is already focused on the future, declaring he is "eager to win" both the upcoming Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain and the tournament itself.
