Rays' Drew Rasmussen loses no-hit bid in 7th inning on leadoff double by Heliot Ramos

NEW YORK (AP) — Tampa Bay right-hander Drew Rasmussen lost a no-hit bid against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night when Heliot Ramos led off the seventh inning with a double.

The Rays, attempting to clinch the AL East title, had a 4-0 lead when Ramos lined a 1-2 sinker to left field, two pitches after hitting a foul ball down the right field line.

Before losing his no-hit bid, Rasmussen had 10 strikeouts and has thrown 93 pitches, 59 for strikes through six innings.

Matt Garza is the only Tampa Bay pitcher to throw a no-hitter. Garza no-hit Detroit on July 26, 2010, at Tropicana Field.

Rasmussen ended the sixth inning by getting New York's Cody Bellinger on a flyball to right field.

Rasmussen walked Austin Wells with one out in the third and ended the inning by striking out Ben Rice on a high fastball. The 31-year-old issued a leadoff walk to Cody Bellinger and ended the fourth by striking out rookie Spencer Jones with a fastball.

Rasmussen got consecutive strikeouts on rookie George Lombard Jr. and Austin Wells to finish the fifth at 78 pitches.

The Rays can claim their fifth AL East title with a victory and took a 1-0 lead on Ryan Vilade’s groundout in the third against Max Fried. They added three in the seventh on a bunt single by Taylor Walls and a two-run base hit by Yandy Diaz.

The Yankees have been no-hit eight times. The last was a combined no-hitter by Houston’s Cristian Javier, Hector Neris and Ryan Pressly on June 25, 2022, at Yankee Stadium.
