Cedric Mullins homers in 13th to lift Rays past Pirates 8-7 in rain-soaked game

Cedric Mullins led off the 13th inning with a two-run home run and the Tampa Bay Rays outlasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 on a rainy Saturday

Not in lineup Friday Walls is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates.
Impact Walls had started all nine games since returning from the injured list April 6, so this will be his first day off. Ben Williamson is starting at shortstop, with Richie Palacios handling second base for Tampa Bay. Walls is slashing .310/.375/.345 with a double, four RBI, six runs scored, two stolen bases and a 2:6 BB:K across 35 trips to the plate since making his season debut.

Rays extend Yanks' skid to 4, rally on Walls and Aranda infield grounders in 10th for 5-4 win

Returns from injured list The Rays activated Walls (oblique) from the 10-day injured list Monday, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports.
Impact Walls got a late start to the season due to a right oblique strain, but he's been cleared to return to action after playing in some extended spring training contests. The slick-fielding Walls should take over as the Rays' primary shortstop, though the club will want to give Ben Williamson some reps there, as well.
APRIL 6 • ROTOWIRE
Playing in extended spring games Manager Kevin Cash said Saturday that Walls (oblique) has progressed to playing in games at extended spring training, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact The next step for Walls is presumably to head out on a rehab assignment in the minors, but the Rays don't have a timetable in place for when that might happen. Once he's cleared to return to the active roster, the 29-year-old could compete with Carson Williams for starts at shortstop, as the latter has slashed just .130/.167/.174 during his first seven games of the season.

Goes on 10-day IL The Rays placed Walls on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right oblique strain.
Impact Walls is slated to miss at least the first couple weeks of the season due to an oblique strain that first popped up in late February. Carson Williams will handle shortstop for the Rays while Walls is out and could keep the job if he gets off to a hot start.

Out at least 3-4 weeks Walls received a cortisone injection in his right oblique and is expected to be sideline at least 3-to-4 weeks, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.
Impact The 29-year-old sustained the injury earlier this week and will begin the season on the injured list. It wouldn't be surprising if Walls is sidelined beyond that 3-for-4-week minimum given the nature of oblique injuries. Top prospect Carson Williams is expected to step in at shortstop for the Rays and may not cede the job back to Walls, who had a .584 OPS since making his MLB debut in 2021.

Rays shortstop Taylor Walls to start season on injured list because of oblique problem

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls will open the season on the injured list because of a problem with his right oblique
MARCH 19 • Associated Press
Opening season on injured list Walls will open the season on the 10-day injured list due to a strained right oblique, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Walls had been set to begin the season as the Rays' starting shortstop, but his injury now opens the door for top prospect Carson Williams to run with the job after Williams had initially been dispatched to Triple-A Durham earlier this week. A career .195/.286/.298 hitter across 1,560 plate appearances, Walls was unlikely to hit enough to hold onto the job for long.

Starting Saturday's exhibition Walls (oblique) will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Walls was slated to make his spring debut last weekend before being scratched due to oblique tightness. The issue didn't set him back much, however, and Walls still has plenty of time to ramp up for Opening Day assuming no further delays. Walls' 2025 season was cut short when he underwent sports hernia surgery in September.

Hopes to be back later this week Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday that Walls (oblique) "came in feeling really good today" and could return to Grapefruit League action later this week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa...
Impact Walls had to be scratched from Sunday's game due to the injury, but the Rays appear optimistic it's just a minor setback. The veteran infielder is also coming back from last September's sports hernia surgery, though that hasn't limited him in camp. Walls is competing to start at shortstop for the Rays.
FEBRUARY 23 • ROTOWIRE
Scratched from lineup Sunday Walls was removed from the lineup for Sunday's Grapefruit League game versus Pittsburgh due to oblique tightness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Walls had been set to make his first spring appearance, which would have also been his first game action since early September of last year, as he ended the campaign on the 60-day IL due to sports hernia surgery. Per Topkin, Walls' removal from the lineup Sunday was precautionary, but the Rays figure to take a cautious approach to his return to action given that the spring slate has just gotten underway. Raynel Delgado has taken Walls' place at shortstop and in the leadoff spot against the Pirates.
FEBRUARY 22 • ROTOWIRE
Making spring debut Sunday Walls (sports hernia) will start at shortstop and bat leadoff in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Walls underwent sports hernia surgery in early September last year, ending his season after 101 games and 317 plate appearances. A .195/.286/.298 career hitter over parts of five big-league seasons with the Rays, Walls may have the leg up on prospect Carson Williams for the starting job at shortstop thanks to his plus defense.
FEBRUARY 22 • ROTOWIRE
Could begin season as top shortstop Walls (sports hernia) appears to be in position to begin the season as Tampa Bay's top shortstop, per Adam Berry of MLB.com.
Impact With spring training on the horizon, Walls is set to compete primarily with top prospect Carson Williams for everyday reps at shortstop. Walls is coming off sports hernia surgery, which ended his 2025 campaign in August, so he'll need to prove he's healthy during Grapefruit League play as well. Even in a potential full-time role, the switch-hitting infielder could struggle for fantasy relevance after slashing just .220/.280/.319 with four home runs, 38 RBI, 36 runs scored and 14 stolen bases across 317 regular-season plate appearances (101 games) last year.

Rays closer Pete Fairbanks becomes free agent when option declined. Rays keep Brandon Lowe

The Tampa Bay Rays declined an $11 million option on Pete Fairbanks, allowing their closer to become a free agent, while exercising an $11.5 million option on Brandon Lowe
NOVEMBER 6, 2025 • Associated Press
Option exercised, another one added The Rays exercised Walls' (sports hernia) $2.45 million option for 2026 and added a $3.1 million club option for 2027 on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact The new deal covers Walls' remaining years of arbitration eligibility, if the 2027 option is picked up. Walls is a career .195/.286/.298 hitter over parts of five major-league seasons but is regarded as a plus defender. He could compete for the starting shortstop job next season with Carson Williams but could ultimately settle into a utility infielder role. Walls is recovering from sports hernia surgery but is expected to be ready for spring training.

Gold Glove at shortstop is finally within reach for Rays' Taylor Walls The defensive wizard, who has not always gotten enough innings at the position to be eligible, is named a finalist.
