CINCINNATI (AP) The Reds have decided to get by without Joey Votto by making a big switch.
They had right fielder Jay Bruce at first base on Monday for the first time in his career. Bruce has played all three outfield positions, but hasn’t played first base since high school.
Votto missed 23 games with a strained muscle above his left knee that is expected to bother him the rest of the season. He’s batting only .250 since his return and hasn’t hit a homer since May 10. Votto was out of the lineup for Sunday’s 4-2 win over Milwaukee.
Votto got another exam on Monday. The Reds will decide whether to put him on the DL after they get the results.
