Rays release infielder Alexi Casilla

Rotowire: Jun 29 / 1:40p ET
News: Casilla was traded from the Rays to the Tigers for a player to be named later, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact: Casilla was having a strong season for Triple-A Durham, hitting .315/.379/.449 in 37 games. With Ian Kinsler occupying second base for the Tigers, this move appears to be to build organizational depth up the middle after trading Devon Travis to the Blue Jays in the offseason.
Rotowire: Apr 9 / 3:08p ET
News: Casilla re-signed with the Rays on Thursday, and he will start off at Triple-A Durham, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact: Casilla didn't make the Opening Day roster, as the Rays settled on Logan Forsythe and Tim Beckham for infield depth, with Nick Franklin (oblique) opening his season on the disabled list. Given that Franklin isn't expected to be out for long, it may be a while before Casilla has any shot to reach the majors.
