The Blue Jays have exercised its $6.7 million club option on Happ, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
Happ isn't any team's idea of a frontline starter, but he proved to be a capable back-end arm for the Jays last season, compiling a 4.22 ERA and 7.6 K/9 rate over 158 innings. The strikeout rate was a dramatic improvement from his mark in 2013, and can likely be attributed to an increase in his average fastball velocity from 91.1 miles per hour to 92.7. It's somewhat rare for a player to pick up velocity in his age-31 season, but the Jays evidently see it as something the lefty can sustain.
