ASU notebook: Magee sees football in future
In an online fan chat Wednesday, ASU senior linebacker Brandon Magee reiterated his plan to pursue football after the season rather than baseball with the Boston Red Sox.
"I think I've made it too far in the football world right now not to see how far it goes," Magee said.
Magee, an All-Pac-12 second-team pick, signed a multiyear contract with the Red Sox after being selected in the 23rd round of the 2012 MLB draft.
Junior safety Alden Darby admitted in the same chat that some ASU players were hoping for a bowl rematch with Boise State this year after last year's debacle in the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas. The Broncos won that contest 56-24, handing ASU its fifth straight loss to end the year.
"It would have been nice to get a rematch against Boise for the simple fact that they sort of embarrassed us last year," Darby said. "From being on the team last year, I can honestly say we didn't play the game like we know how to play the game. We had no pride out there, no character, no discipline. It would have been nice to go out there and play that team like we know how to play."
Darby emphasized, however, that the Sun Devils are honored to take on Navy in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 29.
COACHING CONNECTION
The coaching carousel turned fast on Tuesday, and while ASU was not part of the madness this year, coach Todd Graham had a tie in the process.
One of Graham's former offensive coordinators at Tulsa, Gus Malzahn, took over at Auburn after spending a year at Arkansas State. Malzahn worked with Graham in 2007 and 2008, making Tulsa's offense tops in the nation both years. He became Auburn's offensive coordinator in 2009 and remained with the Tigers until taking the Arkansas State job last year.
BACK TO WORK
After four days off while coaches recruited, ASU returns to the practice field Friday and continues daily practice through Tuesday before taking a week off. One thing to watch: Will Sutton missed ASU's practices last weekend with a sprained toe. While he's expected to play in the bowl game, it's unknown if he'll be participate in practice this weekend.
