Williams helps with tornado cleanup

Published Apr. 17, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

While Gregg Williams' name may be mud in NFL circles, a couple in Kansas knows him only as the Good Samaritan who came to its aid in the wake of the weekend's devastating tornado.

Scott Lyon admitted to KSN-TV he had no idea who Williams was when he arrived uninvited in a pickup truck with a friend to offer their services clearing debris from the homeowner's damaged property in Wichita.

Hours after the tornado swept through the city Saturday, the disgraced coach at the center of the Saints bounty scandal was busying himself with the cleanup alongside Lyon and his girlfriend.

"He was chainsawing, cutting branches," Lyon said. "He was getting his hands pretty dirty."

The defensive coordinator, who was hired by the Rams this offseason before the scandal broke, is serving an indefinite suspension from the league for masterminding the system that paid Saints players to intentionally injure their opponents.

Lyon said it took Williams, who was with New Orleans from 2009 to 2011, to mention the scandal for him to realize who had been pitching in at his property.

Lyon said Williams playfully told him, "Now don't be saying anything about my bounty head program and me having to leave."

"I think he was trying to hint to me and I really didn't catch on," Lyon added.

Lyon said Williams spent around 30 to 45 minutes helping out Saturday night, before leaving to catch a flight to St. Louis.
