The Panthers announce Cam Newton is cleared to play for Week 6
The Carolina Panthers received a bit of good news on Saturday, as quarterback Cam Newton was officially cleared from the NFL's concussion protocol.
The Panthers face the the Saints in New Orleans at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, and they'll likely need Newton to be at his best to keep up with the Saints offense. Carolina will be without cornerbacks Robert McClain and James Bradberry, forcing the Panthers to rely on rookies Daryl Worley and either Zack Sanchez or Teddy Williams at the starting corner spots.
Star wideout Kelvin Benjamin is questionable with a knee injury.
Newton suffered a concussion during the Panthers' Week 4 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and missed Week 5, a game Carolina lost to Tampa Bay. Backup Derek Anderson started in Newton's place against the Bucs, completing 18 of 28 attempts for 278 yards and two INTs. For the season, Newton has completed 77 of 133 for 974 yards (7.3 yards/attempt), six TDs, and five INTs. Newton has been sacked 13 times in four games, a startling number when compared to the 33 sacks he took all of last season.
