Texans 'very happy' with rookie CB Kevin Johnson

Houston Texans cornerback Kevin Johnson is quickly proving himself capable of making a contribution on defense as a rookie.

Johnson, the 16th overall pick in last April's draft, helped hold Denver Pro Bowl receiver Demaryius Thomas largely in check during Houston's preseason loss to the Broncos Saturday night.

Thomas, who agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with the Broncos in July, had three receptions for 24 yards on six targets. On one play, Johnson ended a Denver drive knocking a Peyton Manning pass out of Thomas's hands.

“It felt good, just to go out there and go against somebody who’s been very accomplished in the NFL,” Johnson said, per the Houston Chronicle. “Getting that look, so I kind of know what it feels like in the future. It felt good to come out here and know I can play.”

Johnson played 42 snaps Saturday night, the most of any Houston defensive player.

“It was my first time playing against Peyton, just trying to go out there and stay focused and not let the game get too big,” Johnson said. “It was pretty cool looking in at the quarterback and it was Peyton Manning.”

Texans head coach Bill O'Brien praised the rookie's effort.

“Kevin Johnson, he’s instinctive,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said Sunday. “There are always things that he can improve upon, but he’s very competitive. He’s got a passion for the game.

“He’s a smart player. We play him in different spots. He’s able to pick up what we’re doing. We’ve been very happy with Kevin.”
