Well, we can finally put this rumor to rest. On Thursday multiple media outlets reported that the San Diego Chargers have informed quarterback Philip Rivers that he will not be traded.

While the Chargers had met with Rivers’ agent and claimed that they did not want to move him and that they were committed to working out a long-term contract extension with the quarterback, this is bigger news. We have been told that the team has personally informed Rivers that he will not be moved in any deal.

The Chargers had a brief dalliance with Marcus Mariota and considered trading up in the 2015 NFL Draft for the Oregon quarterback, but that fizzled. They now appear committed to moving forward with Rivers as their franchise quarterback.

The 33-year-old Rivers is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and has spent his entire career in San Diego. Seeing him in another uniform would just be weird, he has been the heart and soul of the Chargers for so long it just wouldn’t fit anywhere else.

The next job for the Chargers will be working out long-term extensions with Rivers and safety Eric Weddle so that both guys retire with the franchise. The team’s potential move to Los Angeles could complicate those talks, as neither guy is keen on leaving San Diego.
