Report: Ravens paid Ray Rice nearly $1.6 million in settlement
If Ray Rice never plays in the NFL again, he reportedly got a nice send-off.
The free-agent running back who was released by the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 8 after a video surfaced showing him punch his then-fiancée in the face in a casino elevator, received $1.588 million from the team as part of a settlement in January, the Baltimore Sun reported on Tuesday.
According to the Sun, Rice was seeking back pay of his $3.529 million base salary when he filed a wrongful-termination grievance in October. According to the report, the Ravens and the running back reached the settlement before meeting with an arbitrator.
Rice, 28, was also suspended indefinitely at the time of his release by the Ravens. He won an appeal of that suspension in late November and immediately became a free agent. He was not signed by any team before the conclusion of the season, however.
Rice was originally suspended two games by the NFL in July for hitting Janay Rice (the couple married in March) in an Atlantic City casino elevator, but that suspension was changed to an indefinite one after the video from inside the elevator became public in September.
