Report: Detroit Lions host RB Ben Tate among others for workout
The Detroit Lions are apparently on the lookout for help at the offensive skill positions, as the Detroit Free Press reports that the team is hosting running backs Ben Tate and Daniel Thomas, as well as wide receivers Robert Meachem and Brad Smith, for workouts on Tuesday.
Tate is the biggest name in the bunch, but he struggled through an awful season last year. Ten games into a two-year deal with the Cleveland Browns, Tate was waived. He was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings and was waived again. The Pittsburgh Steelers then signed him for a playoff game, which they lost.
In all, Tate finished the season with 371 yards and four touchdowns. His average of 3.1 yards per carry in 2014 was a far cry from the healthy 4.7 yards per carry he averaged as Arian Foster's backup in Houston from 2011-2013.
The rest of the players slated for the workout have mixed credentials. Thomas, a former second-round draft pick, never caught on in four years with the Miami Dolphins. Smith, who long ago made the transition from quarterback to receiver, has been hanging around the league since 2006. Meachem was once a solid role player for the New Orleans Saints.
