Report: 49ers, Smith agree to terms

Published Mar. 20, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

The San Francisco 49ers agreed to terms with quarterback Alex Smith, NFL Network reported on Tuesday.

The terms were not disclosed.

Smith, who had been a free agent on a short-term deal from last offseason, progressed in the 49ers offense. Smith led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game last season in head coach Jim Harbaugh’s first season.

He met with the Miami Dolphins over the weekend after it was reported that Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman watched Peyton Manning work out .

Smith started all 16 games for the Niners, throwing for 3,144 yards and 17 touchdowns.

It’s likely that Smith will be in competition with second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
