Ravens' Steve Smith Sr. explains why his comeback has nothing to do with NFL records

When Steve Smith ruptured his right Achilles tendon last season, that could have been the end of the line for one of the NFL's most successful wide receivers.

The 37-year-old seriously contemplated retirement, to the point that he was telling reporters and teams alike that he was done with the game of football. Yet after a bit of time to consider all of his options, Smith decided to come back for at least one more season with the Baltimore Ravens.

On Thursday, Smith explained the real motivation for his return. Yes, a Super Bowl would be great. Reaching the 1,000-catch milestone would be awesome, too. But Smith's comeback is really about the Ravens.

That's a touching sentiment from Smith, a guy we don't usually associate with touchy-feely emotions. In fact, the Baltimore WR couldn't resist taking a shot at those questioning whether he'll be healthy this season:

There we go. That's the Smith we all know.

Although he might now balk at the idea of coming back to set records, Smith might be keeping things close to the vest here. Back in June, he joked with reporters that if he's lucky enough to reach 1,000 catches, he might just call it quits on the spot.

As for that potential Super Bowl ring? Bovada.com lists the Ravens right in the middle of the pack of championship odds at 40:1, so it's probably for the best that Smith isn't concerned with a ring. Chances are he won't get one this season.
