Raiders roll the dice on mammoth Florida defensive tackle Leon Orr
He's big enough to instantly become the Raiders' largest defensive lineman.
But the Raiders need to find out if UDFA tackle Leon Orr has the heart to match his size.
The signs were there if the former Florida Gator fizzles out. Orr arrived in Gainesville as a top-rated recruit, but left prematurely, citing a lack of playing time.
Then-Gators coach Will Muschamp criticized him. And while Orr apologized for leaving his teammates, he said he had reason to quit the Gators.
"When I play football, it's personal for me," Orr told the Gainesville Sun. "I'm in a predicament where if I don't get on that field and perform, I can't provide for my family. I want to be able to pay for my grandmother's hospital bills so she's not $100,000 in debt. I want to take care of my single mother. I want to put my daughter and my sisters and nieces in college."
He'll get a chance to do just that on the Raiders. After all, new head coach Jack Del Rio's defenses are at their best with multiple menacing tackles manning the interior.
"Big" John Henderson and Marcus Stroud starred for Del Rio in Jacksonville. And Orr fits their mold at 6-foot-5 and 323 pounds, but there are reasons why all 32 teams passed on him in the draft.
