Policy: "My job is to present Carson as the best possible alternative"
He was called upon the last time the NFL had Los Angeles stadium problems that needed solving.
Now, 71-year-old Carmen Policy is back to help the league with the same problem 21 years later.
"My job is to present Carson as the best possible alternative," said Policy, who was selected by the Raiders and Chargers to spearhead their Carson, Calif. stadium efforts. "I would say that we are not successful if the NFL decides not to go to Carson."
Raiders owner Mark Davis downplayed Policy's involvement at the NFL owner's meetings in San Francisco. But his importance can't be overlooked to a fanbase across the bay; Policy has vital experience with the NFL and Los Angeles relocation.
In 1994, then-commissioner Paul Tagliabue appointed Policy and two others to negotiate on behalf of the league with the Raiders. That deal for a proposed Hollywood Park Stadium did not work -- Al Davis moved his team back to Oakland, and Policy learned a valuable lesson.
Now, he sees a kill-two-birds-with-one-stone scenario for two major California cities.
"So with one great financial commitment, you're solving two problems for two teams that were born in California and are staying in California," Policy said. "I believe Carson is a great site. I don't want to have the whistle blow at the end of this game and lose."
