Polamalu fined for call during game

Published Oct. 21, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

If your husband gets hurt on the job . . . it’s not unreasonable to expect to receive a quick phone call assuring you that he’s ok.

You certainly don’t expect him to be fined $10,000. But if your husband plays in the NFL, that’s exactly what could happen. Troy Polamalu found that out the hard way.

After Polamalu came out of last Sunday’s game against Jacksonville with concussion-like symptoms, he used a cell phone on the sidelines to call his wife — who must have been frantic.

There’s only one problem with that — NFL players can’t use cell phones during the game. Because of that rule, the NFL fined Polamalu.

That’s a hefty price to pay for some peace of mind.
