Panthers place Jon Beason on IR

The Panthers can’t seem to dodge the injury bug. Head coach Ron Rivera delivered the bad news on Wednesday.

Inside linebacker Jon Beason was placed on the injured reserve with an ailing left knee, which he will have surgery on next week, marking the third Panthers star to be added to the dreaded list in as many weeks. Cornerback Chris Gamble and center Ryan Kalil have been sidelined with season-ending injuries.

Although Beason has been inactive for the last two weeks, the team was hopeful that he would make a return to the field. He wasn’t so fortunate.

"I've been pretty banged up, it's been week to week," Beason told News 14 Carolina. "And we decided to take another look at the knee, see what's going on. (I) got the MRI yesterday and it didn't look good, so I'm probably going to have to have surgery and if I do that, I'm going to end up on the IR.

"So that's probably what we're going to do, moving forward, probably early next week. But, it's part of the business, man. You can't control injuries."

Beason, who signed a five-year, $50 million extension before the 2011 season, played only one game last year before sustaining a season-ending Achilles injury.

The Panthers have claimed cornerback James Dockery off waivers from Cleveland to replace Beason on the roster. Dockery joined the Panthers at practice.

Rivera noted that rookie linebacker Luke Kuechly will continue to fill in for Beason. The Panthers drafted Kuechly No. 9 overall in the 2012 draft.
